Holiday dinners are a tradition and most people know what to do and what not to do. When preparing food, ensure that any flammable items that are being used or happen to be nearby are kept far from a stove or any conductible appliance. Never leave an oven or stove unattended.
String lights and decorations require proper assembly and usage to avoid a safety hazard. Homeowners should examine the string lights every year, especially if they intend to reuse ones from the year before. Check for bulbs with cracks or frayed wires. Ensure extension cords are not being overloaded and remember to turn off the lights or set up a timer before going to bed.
The National Fire Protection Association says that Christmas trees have been responsible for more than $10 million in damages between 2011 to 2015. Homeowners that prefer natural trees should make sure they are properly and consistently watered as dry needles are a major fire hazard. Remember to turn the tree lights off each evening.
